Climate Solutions that Measure Up: An Introduction to High Accountability Carbon Removal with Anu Khan

Climate Solutions that Measure Up: An Introduction to High Accountability Carbon Removal with Anu Khan

You press send on an online order or book a flight, and a pop-up asks if you want to offset the emissions associated with your purchase. Promises to carbon footprints or claims of carbon neutrality are everywhere, but who is ensuring these efforts yield results? It’s an open question.

Carbon removal, on the other hand, aims to remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it underground, either in geologic storage or durably in our soils, oceans, and forests. It addresses legacy emissions, rather than maintaining the same concentration of carbon in the atmosphere. Measurement and verification distinguish carbon removal from unverifiable voluntary carbon reductions, making robust measurement and verification of carbon removal a fundamental prerequisite to building trust in carbon removal as a critical climate solution.

Anu Khan is the Deputy Director of Science and Innovation at Carbon180. Founded in 2015, Carbon180 works to bring together policymakers, scientists, and entrepreneurs to design the policies needed to get carbon removal to gigaton scale.

The architecture of social space: Creating spaces of critique within the places we live

From idea to impact: The new market for public health entrepreneurs

From our friends at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health!

Investors have traditionally given short shrift to public health, seeing it as a field for do-gooders, not a vehicle for profits. But that’s starting to change. More academic researchers and public health professionals are seeking to take their discoveries commercial, and more investors are willing to listen. In this panel, Harvard Public Health magazine brings together founders and investors to talk about the challenges — and rewards— of developing affordable goods and services aimed at improving health on a population scale. And if you have an idea you’d like to bring to market, check out HealthLab, a new accelerator for student ventures focused on improving public and planetary health. Co-founded by Harvard Chan School and Harvard College’s Lemann Program on Creativity and Entrepreneurship, HealthLab will welcome its first cohort of students from across the University this fall. Participants receive startup support, mentorship—and the chance to compete for a $100,000 prize.
